FREE ICT SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAMME
Taking Technology to the People—Empowering the Future, One Community at a Time.”
In today’s rapidly evolving world, technology drives education, employment, communication, and economic growth. Digital literacy is no longer a luxury—it is a fundamental skill required to function effectively in society.
However, despite this reality, a significant portion of the population—particularly in the Eastern Cape—remains digitally excluded.
Limited access to computers and internet
Many individuals in rural and township communities face severe infrastructure challenges, including:
- Lack of computers in homes and schools
- Limited or no internet connectivity
- High cost of data and digital devices
- Overcrowded or under-resourced educational facilities
As a result:
- Learners cannot complete digital assignments
- Job seekers cannot apply for online opportunities
- Entrepreneurs cannot access digital markets
This programme addresses this gap by providing direct access to digital tools and connectivity, both at the academy and through mobile outreach.
Lack of digital education
Even when access exists, many individuals lack the knowledge and skills to use technology effectively.
This includes:
- Basic computer operation (typing, using software)
- Navigating the internet
- Using email and online communication tools
- Understanding digital safety and responsibility
Without these skills:
- Individuals remain excluded from opportunities
- Technology becomes intimidating rather than empowering
Excel Gene Academy’s programme focuses on practical, hands-on training, ensuring participants not only learn but also confidently apply digital skills in real-life situations.
High unemployment due to skills gaps
One of the biggest challenges in South Africa, particularly among youth, is unemployment driven by a mismatch between available jobs and skills.
Many job opportunities today require:
- Basic computer literacy
- Ability to use digital platforms
- Online application skills
- Communication through digital tools
However:
- Many job seekers lack these competencies
- Employers struggle to find digitally skilled candidates
This programme directly addresses employability by:
- Equipping participants with job-ready ICT skills
- Teaching online job search and application processes
- Building confidence to operate in modern workplaces

Bridging the Digital Divide
| Empowering Communities | Creating Opportunities.
Excel Gene Academy proudly presents a Free Digital Literacy Skills Training Programme, a high-impact initiative designed to bridge the digital divide and create equal opportunities for individuals in underserved communities across the Eastern Cape. This programme is built on the understanding that in today’s world, digital skills are no longer optional—they are essential for survival, participation, and success in the modern economy. Yet, thousands of young people and adults remain excluded due to lack of access, training, and exposure.
On-site training at the academy
The programme will offer structured, high-quality digital training at the Excel Gene Academy campus. This environment provides:
- Access to computers, internet, and learning tools that many participants do not have at home
- A safe and supportive learning space where individuals can focus, practice, and grow
- Direct interaction with trained facilitators who guide participants step-by-step
- A structured curriculum that ensures progressive learning from basic to advanced skills
This on-site approach ensures depth of learning, allowing participants to build strong foundational and practical digital competencies.
Mobile ICT training outreach programmes
To reach communities that cannot access the academy, Excel Gene introduces a Mobile ICT Training Model, which takes digital education directly to the people.
This includes:
- Transporting laptops, internet connectivity, and training equipment into rural and township areas
- Setting up temporary digital classrooms in schools, community halls, and public spaces
- Running digital boot camps and outreach sessions for large groups
- Ensuring inclusion of individuals who are geographically and financially excluded
This approach ensures equity and accessibility, removing barriers such as distance, cost, and infrastructure limitations.
Ensuring no individual is left behind in the digital age
The core philosophy of this programme is inclusivity. It recognises that:
- Many individuals have never used a computer before
- Some lack confidence or fear technology
- Others have been excluded due to socio-economic challenges
Through this programme:
- Training starts at a beginner-friendly level
- Learning is practical, supportive, and non-intimidating
- Participants are empowered at their own pace
The goal is to ensure that every participant, regardless of background, gains the skills needed to participate in the digital world.
